FACC BRIGHT SPOTS
FOR BLACK AND BROWN COMMUNITIES

What if the real answers to nonprofit fundraising challenges were already all around us?

In the Fundraising Bright Spots report, we identified and captured the stories of social justice organizing groups that are uniquely successful in their fundraising.

What if we could learn about what’s working from these organizations—not so we could copy their strategies and tactics, but so we could get a better sense of their beliefs, values, and organizational cultures that create conditions for fundraising success

What are participants from our Fundraising Brights Spots Program learning and putting into action?

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

We are excited to offer a new program based on the Fundraising Bright Spots research for graduates and alumni organizations of the Fundraising Academy for Communities of Color in Los Angeles, beginning May 23rd, 2017 and ending January 2018. With generous support from the California Community Foundation, CompassPoint is offering an opportunity for 14 FACC alum based in Black and Brown communities to meet as a learning community over eight months.  We will apply key ideas from the Fundraising Bright Spots research, and create new learning as participants plan, and create new actions to widen fundraising and deepen donor relationships.

We know that the learning and motivation to act is more powerful when participants can see and hear from other people of color who are approaching similar challenges and opportunities to raise funds.

Academy trainers and coaches are seasoned fundraisers and leaders of color who have successfully raised diverse funds in their communities. Articles from the Grassroots Fundraising Journal and presentations by Academy alums further enrich learning by providing examples of strategies and implementation within different communities of color.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

CompassPoint’s 8-month-long intensive, will support your organization's exploration, development, and implementation of a shared leadership approach to fundraising that aligns to and builds on your organizational values, strengths, and identity.

Research from our report, Fundraising Bright Spots, shines a light on how social change organizations that run successful individual donor programs thrive by taking on fundraising in a way that is:

  • Core to the organization’s identity
  • Distributed broadly across staff, board and volunteers
  • Based on authentic relationships with donors
  • Characterized by persistence, discipline, and intentionality

But how can these values play out for your organization when it comes to developing your own fundraising strategy?  What unique strengths and challenges inform fundraising and relationship building in our communities?  You and your team will receive support to apply the learning from the Fundraising Bright Spots report and make it your own. You’ll benefit from new ideas, live examples, and the power of peer-based support and learning.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Paired Participation
In order to get the most from this program, each group will need to participate with two people coming to each session. Pair participants are both involved in fundraising (by staff or board or volunteer role) and commit at least three hours each month to follow up, creating actions in their organization.

Orientation Webinar
The program will be launched on a 90 minute webinar so please save this date and time on your calendar:
June 19, 10am - 12pm

In-person Sessions
There will be five day-long sessions held in June, July, September, November and a final session in January 2018. These sessions will be facilitated and supported by Fundraising Academy Coaches Byron Johnson (CompassPoint) and Belinda Madrid Teitel (Center for Nonprofit Management). Each session will introduce one of the Bright Spots “mindsets”, real time examples, and ample time for participants to share community perspectives and time for your group to consider new actions and plans before you leave the session.

Coaching
10 hours of coaching to activate new plans and practices. Your organization will have a Bright Spots Fundraising coach to work with in between sessions so your team can clarify, strengthen plans as you act on them.
