About Steve
[Pronouns: he/ him/ his]
As a Project Director at CompassPoint, Steve co-leads and co-facilitates learning spaces in coaching skills and resource mobilization. Over his 25 years at CompassPoint, Steve has consulted with organizations in strategic planning, board development, fundraising and multicultural organizational development. He has designed CompassPoint learning cohorts that have supported several generations of social justice leaders, including the Fundraising Academy for Communities of Color, Fundraising Bright Spots, Next Generation Leaders of Color, and more recently, the Resource Mobilizer Practice Pods. Steve also supports CompassPoint’s sustainability and growth through fund development and relationship stewarding.
Steve's work has also been informed by his experience in developing and leading nonprofit organizations, advocacy coalitions, and planning bodies for over a decade in response to the AIDS and HIV epidemic in San Francisco. These experiences sharpened his own understanding of the unique role that community-based organizations play in changing policies and systems to serve the common good.
Steve was born in Watsonville, grew up in Sacramento, and currently lives in Oakland, where he grows lots of flowers. He volunteers as a fundraising coach and mentor for QTBIPOC organizers and is currently a member organizer for Third Act, a network of people over 60 who are working to slow climate change and support youth-led change.
